Call “Preparation of stock of infrastructure projects for
ERDF 2014-2020 – Third Call ”, Contract Number: HR R.C.2.2.10-0005
construction is considered one of the main factors influencing the development of the world economy, as identified by the Industrial Strategy of the Republic of Croatia 2014-2020. In Croatia, metallurgy is a traditional, profitable and export-oriented industry. However, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises based on knowledge of metallurgy is insufficient. Furthermore, there is a lack of active cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in the field of metallurgy, universities and public authorities, as well as limited communication within the research community itself. So far, certain groups of the scientific research community through their scientific research have participated in the design and development of materials and products, and optimization of production technologies in cooperation with similar scientific research institutions in Europe and small and medium enterprises in metallurgy. Despite the recognition of individual employees and institutions at the global level, due to the lack of interdisciplinary approach and lack of adequate highly sophisticated equipment that would enable the competitiveness of the Faculty of Metallurgy in science and research, levels of cooperation were limited.
The project “Foundry Center – SIMET” directly contributes to the achievement of Thematic Objective 1 of the Operational Program for Cohesion and Competitiveness 2014-2020: Strengthening research, technological development and innovation, Investment Priority 1a – Improving infrastructure and capacity for research and innovation (I&I) s with the aim of developing I&I performance and promoting competence centers, especially those of European interest, Specific objective 1a1Increased research, development and innovation (IRI) capacity to conduct top quality research and meet the needs of the economy.
The implementation of the project will improve the conditions for innovation in the public sector of research, development and innovation and contribute to improving the overall competitiveness of the Croatian economy. In addition to the above, a base of technological solutions in metallurgy will be created, which can be the basis for economic growth and knowledge-based entrepreneurship. The Faculty of Metallurgy of the University of Zagreb, as the only institution in this field in the Republic of Croatia, implies strategic and continuous improvement of scientific research work. During the preparation of the project proposal “Foundry Center – SIMET” identified problems such as insufficient level of innovation due to lack of adequate equipment and interdisciplinary approach and systematically unregulated scientific interaction (individual recognition, inability to finance projects) with other stakeholders (foreign research institutions, business stakeholders). Indirectly, the strengthening of a scientific research institution and its work can have a positive impact on the transfer of knowledge and technology to all stakeholders.
Considering the fact that the share of research and development in the GDP of the Republic of Croatia is very low compared to the average value of the share in the EU, and given the importance of technical and technological development as a factor in economic development of regions, the proposed project proposal , and innovation. In this regard, it is necessary to improve the organizational and existing physical infrastructure of the Faculty of Metallurgy.
