Project Goal
The aim of the project is to create a scientific infrastructure as well as the creation and improvement of modern scientific research capacities for research, development and innovation (IRI) in the field of development of materials and technologies in the field of metallurgy in Croatia and Europe. Capacity building will also encourage organizational reform to improve the functioning and quality of research activities. In this way, through the reform and improvement of the scientific infrastructure, the recognition of the Institution as an internationally competitive scientific institution will increase.
The Faculty of Metallurgy of the University of Zagreb is the only scientific and educational institution in Croatia that provides higher education in the field of metallurgy and industrial ecology, and through organized conferences, seminars, workshops and lectures foundry industry. The Faculty of Metallurgy bases its activity on high academic and ethical values and contribution and responsibility towards society, aware of its strengths and weaknesses and persistent in dealing with difficulties. The Faculty is the center of scientific research and publishing activities in the field of technical sciences – metallurgy, and provides scientific and professional support to economic entities of metallurgical, metalworking, shipbuilding and foundry industries in the Republic of Croatia, which is especially important after the closure of relevant industrial institutes.
The implementation of this project will stimulate the process of innovation, create a triple helix effect, ie unite the scientific research sector, government officials and the economy, which will consequently affect economic growth.
Establishment of the Foundry Center – SIMET includes reconstruction and adaptation of existing research infrastructure and procurement and installation of highly sophisticated equipment which will improve the research capacity of higher education institutions, improve teaching methods using modern technologies and encourage strengthening links between the research sector and the economy. staff with the aim of raising competencies for the transfer of knowledge and technology through the “know-how” principle. In addition to raising scientific research and professional competencies, the Center will also focus on educational activities as part of lifelong learning.
The purposefulness of the Center will be reflected in targeted research in material development and technology transfer to real sector partners from idea to finished product.
The activities of the Center will be directed in three main directions:
- Design of innovative materials according to the specific requirements of the market, ie the manufacturer and characterization of the synthesized or innovated material according to the specific improved and / or required properties of the final product.
- Product development using sophisticated CAD / CAE technologies to develop casting and solidification processes and predict potential errors. With product development along with prototyping and tools, the emphasis is placed on innovation and optimization of production processes and procedures.
- Lifelong learning based on bringing sophisticated equipment and research to students, business professionals and all interested stakeholders and knowledge based on them that will enable the development of engineering skills, innovation and inventiveness in solving project tasks and thus launch globally competent experts in the metalworking industry and employees metallurgical enterprises.
Research, development and innovation within the Center for Foundry-SIMET are designed in two directions:
- design and development of innovative materials with improved properties and
- product development, prototyping and tools with an emphasis on innovation and optimization of production processes and procedures.
